The New Acropolis Museum is located just two-hundred yards south of the Acropolis itself in the Makrigiani District. The main entrance is off of Dionissiou Areopagitou Street, part of the pedestrian promenade that winds around the southern and western flanks of the Acropolis.
Getting to the museum could not be easier. Take the Metro (Line 2) to the Akropoli exit (just one stop south of Syntagma Square). Head upstairs following the “Dionissiou Areopagitou” signs. Escalators will carry you up to the surface level. When you hit the sidewalks, you are on Makrigiani Street and should be headed north. Walk straight ahead about 20 yards. This will dump you onto Dionissiou Areopagitou Street, at which point you will turn left (west). Go another 25 to 30 yards and the entrance to the museum will be on your left. Walk down some stairs, go through a plexiglass gate, and you’ll see a doorway with an “Entrance” sign above it.
Alternatively, if you have just visited the Acropolis and want to top your tour with a look at the New Museum, walk downhill (east) on Dionissiou Areopagitou Street, with the Acropolis on your left and a line of expensive apartments and condos on your right. Look for a break in the housing as you near the bottom of the hill—on your right. Again, go down some stairs, through a plexiglass gate, and you’ll see the entrance ahead of you.
The agora is a large, park-like area just to the northwest of the Acropolis.
There are two primary entrances to the agora: South (for those who are coming from the Acropolis) and North (closest to the Metro stations). You’ll find the South Entrance as you leave the Acropolis (heading north), pass the Areopagus (on your left), and walk downhill along the route of the Sacred Way. Easy.
For the North Entrance (recommended), you need to take the Metro to either Thissio Station (Line 1) or Monastiraki Station (Line 1 or 3). The North Entrance is located between the two stations on Adrianou Street. Adrianou dumps right into the Thissio Station … just step out of the station, find Adrianou, and walk due east for about 50 yards. The entrance is on your right. From Monastiraki Station, walk a block north (on Areos Street) and then turn right on Adrianou. Go about 100 yards and the entrance will be on your left.
There are two major entrances to the Acropolis: the West Entrance (which leads directly up to the Parthenon and its friends; and the Southeast entrance (which takes you through the “back door” of the South Slope of the Acropolis before putting you on the summit itself). You want this latter entrance.
Take the Metro to the Acropolis Station (just one stop south of Syntagma Square on Line 2). Head upstairs following the “Dionissiou Areopagitou” signs. Escalators will carry you up to the surface level. When you hit the sidewalks, you are on Makrigiani Street and should be headed north. Walk straight ahead about 20 yards. This will dump you onto Dionissiou Areopagitou Street. Just across that street and a little to your left, you’ll see a very small park-like area. That’s the entrance to the South Acropolis.
(Just east of this area, by the way, are public restrooms. You’ll find stairs leading down to them. You might consider using the facilities before you tackle the Acropolis.)
Take the Metro to Thissio Station (Line 1). Follow the signs for “Apostolou Paulou” up to the surface. You’ll find yourself standing on a broad boulevard that (off to your right) turns into Apostolou Paulou Street—the new pedestrian promenade that runs along the western edge of the agora and Acropolis. Directly across the street is a large, park-like area. That “park” is the ancient Agora of Athens.
For the Night Walk, you will follow Apostolou Paulou south (uphill) to take in the incredible sights of the Acropolis, brilliantly lit after sundown. The tour begins, however, right where you are. You’ll listen for a few moments, then cross the street to take a closer look at the Hephaestion.
